I get asked almost every day why I would trade Palm Springs, California for Westcliff on Sea, Essex, but trade I did, and I cherish every day that I spend in this gloriously old and endearing country. And as I began the search for my British ancestors I would have no idea that I would end up living only 34 miles from the birthplace of my 8th great grandfather or that he would become one the first settlers of America. They sailed to that strange and unknown land 20 years before the Mayflower would make the journey. And here I am, a great granddaughter 8 times over and only one of thousands of their descendants; back where they started, back to discover and love the country that has been such a part of me and I didn't even know it... until I got here and remembered.
